There were a lot of firsts for the women’s tennis team in April, when the team won its first-ever ACC championship. To win the title, the Wolfpack recorded its first-ever win against the #1-ranked team in the country, and marked the first time NC State defeated the Tar Heels in 25 years. All the firsts meant there was plenty to celebrate at the Cary (N.C.) Tennis Park, and later when the Memorial Belltower was bathed in red.

Diana Schnaider, a freshman from Moscow, Russia, was the tournament MVP after easily winning her singles match against UNC’s top player. Sophie Abrams, a junior from Germantown, Tenn., closed out the championship with a two-set sweep in her singles match.

The team went on to make a great run in the NCAA tournament in May. They reached the championship match, where they once again found themselves competing against the top-ranked UNC team. The Tar Heels came out on top in the rematch to win the national championship, but the Wolfpack’s Amelia Rajecki got some revenge in the subsequent singles tournament. The junior from Nottingham, England, defeated top-ranked Fiona Crawley of UNC before ultimately losing in the semifinals.

• Beat Florida State, 4-0
• Beat Georgia Tech, 5-0
• Beat UNC, 4-1
• NC State finished the season with a 28-5 record, the best in the program’s history.
• NC State won 14 matches over top-25 teams.
